Sundowns Coach Hit with Costly Lawsuit
Mamelodi Sundowns boss, Rhulani Mokwena, is being sued for defamation by TS Galaxy and their coach, Sead Ramovic.
Per court documents filed recently at the South Gauteng High Court, Rhulani allegedly made the following defamatory remarks after Sundowns’ match against Galaxy on 29 April:
“I am disappointed with the tackle on [Sundowns midfielder] Bongani Zungu; I was told already last night that [Ramovic] showed the tackle that Bongani Zungu made on [Galaxy striker] Bernard Parker. Showed it to the players and said, ‘Don’t forget what Bongani Zungu did.’”
From the sound of things, Mokwena is accusing Ramovic of ordering his players to tackle Zungu in retaliation for the latter’s tackle on Parker – who sustained a broken leg as a result – during their match last October.
Claiming that Mokwena’s statements have caused reputational harm to their club, the Rockets are seeking R1 000 000 in damages, plus they want the Sundowns coach to retract his remarks and cover their legal expenses.
What’s more, Ramovic is seeking an additional R250 000 for personal reputational damage and insult.
Mokwena, however, seems unperturbed by the lawsuit and is ready to meet them at the High Court in the near future.
“They have taken me to court. So, let’s meet in court,” he recently declared.
